Rationale:
We, as teachers, believe that the students will enjoy this book because of the issues regarding immorality. Students have been exposed to immortality and never having to grow up from the story Peter Pan. With Tuck Everlasting, a story about a normal girl meeting an abnormal family, students will be able to question and discuss their thoughts or ideas about whether they wish to become an immortal as well.
The book has very distinct good and bad characters, themes that elementary/middle school students may be facing, talks about first loves, as well as has suspenseful action scenes, and lessons about life. This book also has a tiny bit of magic that makes the ordinary seem extraordinary. Students will be able to use their imagination to make the book and characters come to life.
As the main character is eleven years old, our grade 5 students will be able to relate to her story and easily put themselves in her shoes. This book is a great read for our grade 5 students because, just like Winnie, they are on the brink of leaving childhood and becoming a teenager and all the difficult adult decisions that come with it.
